Project Overview

The original Tirpitz bunker is part of the Atlantic Wall. During the project, the bunker museum, housed within the concrete bunker, was expanded and integrated into the surrounding protected dune landscape.

The museum consists of four "wings," each featuring unique permanent and changing exhibitions. The building also includes a café area, lecture rooms, and educational facilities for school groups.

The building features:

  • Four freestanding in situ cast concrete slabs, with the heaviest weighing 1,090 tons.
  • Heating is provided by ground heat from 23 vertical boreholes.
  • Radiant heating system with 12 km of heating pipes embedded in the ceilings.
  • Wing walls are integrated into the design, allowing for flexible adjustments of exhibition space sizes as needed.

The bunker museum incorporates many innovative solutions, particularly due to its location and construction within protected nature, including sustainable heating with vertical boreholes.

There were also significant accessibility requirements, due to the various museum buildings, the underground tunnel to the nearby bunker, and the location in the protected dune landscape.
